NEWS RELEASE - March 23, 2007

Need for Prenatal Assistance on the Rise

In 2006, the Pregnancy Care Center (formerly the Care Center) assisted in prenatal care and child birthing services, affecting 313 children, which was a 244% increase from 2005.

Carol Morgan, executive director for the center states, “There are so many families who need additional assistance to properly provide prenatal care for their child. As health care and insurance costs are at an all-time high, families are faced with tough choices when it comes to obtaining proper prenatal care. The vast majority of our clients are working women in their 20s and 30s who just need some extra help.”

The center opened in 1978 and has seen more than 3,500 clients throughout the years. Their services include: pregnancy testing, physician referrals, nutritional assessments, counseling services and Lamaze classes. All services are free of charge to women in need.

In 2006, the center had a goal to reach out to more clients by about 30 percent, but the overwhelming demand has strained their financial resources. Morgan states, “Our Board of Directors is working hard to obtain additional financial resources so these babies are born healthy and that the families are prepared for parenthood.”

The Pregnancy Care Center is located at 319 N. Fifth St. in Springfield, and their hours of operation are 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The center can be reached at (217) 525-5630.
